What is a rising sign?
The rising sign is the zodiac sign containing the Ascendant. Its ruler provides a starting point for following the Ascendant through the chart. The Ascendant is the eastern intersection of the ecliptic and horizon. The sign containing that point depends on the birth time, location and zodiac used.
A rising sign does not place its ruler in the same sign or house. Locate the ruler separately, then examine its position and aspects.

Follow the chart in three steps
- Confirm the Ascendant using a reliable birth time and location. If the time is uncertain, keep a supported range; see reading without a birth time.
- Identify the sign ruler using the rulership scheme you have chosen.
- Locate that planet by sign and degree, record the house system, then measure its aspects. The chart-ruler guide walks through this sequence.
Compare the Sun, Moon and rising sign to keep these different parts of the chart distinct.
