The short answer
A synastry house overlay places a planet or point from one natal chart within the house divisions of the other. The receiving chart supplies the house framework, so the direction, house system and birth information must be identified.
Name the receiving chart first
“A’s Venus is in B’s second house” locates A’s Venus using B’s house boundaries. It does not say that Venus occupies A’s own second house, or that B’s Venus occupies any particular house in A’s chart.
Cafe Astrology illustrates house overlays with a bi-wheel and then reverses the two charts to examine the other direction. Its reading treats the receiving houses as symbolic areas of life. This is a practitioner convention, not a measurement of how one person necessarily experiences another.
Look for the chart labels and the house-cusp list before relying on the drawing. A ring containing planets may share the other chart’s house framework rather than show a second complete set of houses. An interaspect asks about two placements’ angular relationship; an overlay asks where one placement falls within a receiving framework.
Two directions, two different results
Use these invented inputs: A’s Ascendant is 18° and Venus is 152°; B’s Ascendant is 96° and Venus is 342°. For this exercise, equal houses begin at each person’s Ascendant and advance in 30° intervals.
A into B: B’s first house begins at 96° and the second at 126°. A’s Venus at 152° lies between B’s second cusp at 126° and third cusp at 156°. It is therefore in B’s second house under this rule.
B into A: A’s eleventh cusp is 18° + 300° = 318°, and the twelfth is 348°. B’s Venus at 342° lies in A’s eleventh house. These two results are compatible: they describe different visiting positions and different receiving boundaries.
Change the house system, check the placement again
Keep B’s Ascendant at 96°, which lies in Cancer, and keep A’s Venus at 152°. In whole-sign houses, Cancer supplies B’s first house from 90° to 120°, Leo the second from 120° to 150°, and Virgo the third from 150° to 180°. The same 152° placement now falls in B’s third house.
Nothing moved in the sky or in the invented inputs. We changed the rule defining houses: equal houses gave house two; whole-sign houses give house three. A screenshot without its settings can conceal this difference. Record the method before comparing interpretations.
A position at 152° is also 4° before the equal-house boundary at 156°. Some practitioners give additional interpretive weight to a nearby following cusp. Keep that convention separate from geometric occupancy: the supplied interval still contains 152°. If a report treats it as part of the next house, ask which rule it is applying.
When one birth time is uncertain
The receiving houses depend on the receiving chart’s birth information and chosen method. The visiting placement can also be uncertain. CHANI’s birth-time explanation highlights time-sensitive angles and the Moon; its house discussion uses a whole-sign framework.
Consider two distinct cases. If B’s time is unknown, the claim about A’s Venus in B’s second house above is unsupported because B’s house boundaries have not been established. Knowing A’s time precisely does not supply B’s missing Ascendant.
If A’s time is unknown but B’s is supported, B’s houses can still be available. You would then need to check the range of A’s visiting longitude over the possible birth interval. Only a placement that remains inside the same receiving interval throughout the checked range can be described as stable under those assumptions. This is a consequence of the geometry, not a guarantee that a date-only chart supplies every overlay.
Do not insert noon and quietly treat the resulting houses as known. Keep the supplied time range and its source visible. See working without a birth time and the angles and axes.
Use house topics to start a conversation
For an original exercise with the equal-house example, follow the established second-house vocabulary of resources and priorities. Ask B: what makes sharing time, money or possessions feel straightforward? Ask A: how do you prefer to discuss an offer, a gift or a shared expense? Neither answer can be read from the invented Venus position.
For the other direction, use the eleventh-house vocabulary of friendships and shared aims. Ask what each person wants from group plans and which commitments they prefer to make individually. The two questions can reveal different practical concerns without assigning a fixed role to either person.
An overlay does not establish who feels more, who caused a problem or whether a relationship should continue. It is also distinct from a conjunction to an angle: occupying an angular house is not automatically being close in degrees to its angle.
Write one complete overlay statement
A clear statement includes four things: the visiting person and placement, the receiving person, the house method and the input certainty. For example: “Using the invented equal-house inputs, A’s Venus at 152° falls in B’s second house, bounded by 126° and 156°.”
Then add a separate interpretation question, and a separate note if the result changes under another method or birth-time range. Keeping those lines distinct makes the comparison easier to revisit without rewriting a convention as a fact about the people.
Continue to composite charts when you want to understand a constructed third chart. A house overlay keeps the two natal charts available; it does not blend their cusps into one new set.
A question to take with you
Can you identify the receiving chart, its house system and its time source before describing what an overlay might mean?
